Optimal Setup
The settings I use to build and test every tune.
There is no universal “optimal” setup in Forza. Controllers differ, driving styles differ, and what feels natural to one player can feel terrible to another.
These are simply my settings—and, more importantly, the environment I use to develop and test my tunes.
I play on PC with an Xbox Series controller. I like the controller partly because of the trigger feedback; being able to feel what the car is doing under braking and acceleration gives me another source of information when I’m testing grip, traction, and stability.
I don’t use a wheel. There’s nothing wrong with wheels—they’re cool, and some people are extremely fast with them. I just tune and compete on controller, so that’s the perspective my setups are developed from.
Frame Rate Matters More Than Almost Anything Else
The one recommendation I’d make very strongly to every player is to prioritize a consistent 60 FPS or better.
On PC, lower your graphics settings if necessary to maintain it. On Xbox, I recommend Performance Mode.
For competitive driving, responsiveness matters more to me than visual quality. At a higher, stable frame rate, inputs feel more immediate and you receive more frequent visual feedback from the game. When you’re making small steering corrections, trail braking, catching rotation, or trying to get on the throttle as early as possible, that responsiveness matters.
Consistency is especially important when tuning. If I’m comparing two setups and looking for a few tenths, I want the car to be the variable—not fluctuating performance from my system.
Controller Deadzones
My current settings are:

The important part here is the 0 inside deadzone for steering, throttle, and braking.
I want small inputs to register. When you’re driving near the limit, a huge amount of what you do happens between 0% and 100%—tiny steering corrections, partial throttle, gradually releasing the brake, and so on. I want as much usable input range as possible.
That does not mean everybody should blindly use zero.
If your controller has stick drift, increase the inside deadzone until the unwanted input stops. If your trigger doesn’t reliably return to zero, do the same there. The ideal setting is really the smallest deadzone your individual controller can use reliably.
Likewise, I use 100 outside deadzone because my controller reaches full input properly. If yours doesn’t, adjusting that value can make sense.

A few of those deserve explanation.
I leave the Drivatars on Highly Skilled because I’m not trying to prove anything against the AI. I’d rather they stay out of my way while I evaluate the car. For actual performance testing, lap times and leaderboards tell me far more than increasing Drivatar difficulty ever could.
I use Simulation Steering, with traction control and stability management turned off. If a car can’t put its power down properly or becomes unstable when pushed, I want to feel that. Those are things I may be able to improve in the tune.
I keep ABS on because it gives me consistent braking behavior and lets me focus on what the chassis is doing rather than trying to demonstrate perfect threshold braking on every test lap.
The setting that surprises people most is probably Automatic shifting.
Manual—and especially Manual with Clutch—can absolutely be faster in skilled hands. It gives the driver more control over gearing and lets certain cars take advantage of techniques that Automatic simply can’t reproduce.
I use Automatic because it’s what I’m comfortable and consistent with. That also means there may occasionally be more performance available in one of my tunes than my own leaderboard time demonstrates if you’re an excellent manual driver.
The braking line stays on because it’s useful reference information. I don’t treat it as an instruction. Braking points change depending on the car, tune, corner, and line you’re taking.
Damage and tire wear are off, rewind is available for the occasional moment of Forza nonsense, and launch control stays on.
What This Means for My Tunes
The reason I publish these settings isn’t because you need to copy them.
It’s because this is my test environment.
When I describe a car as having strong turn-in, predictable rotation, good braking stability, or excellent grip, these are the settings I’m using to make that judgment. When I compare different builds and chase leaderboard times, this is the baseline I’m working from.
Your setup can be different.
Use a wheel if you prefer one. Use Manual if you’re faster with it. Increase your deadzones if your controller needs it. Change assists to fit your driving style.
The important thing is to build a setup that is responsive, consistent, and familiar enough that the controls disappear and you can concentrate on the car.
That’s what “optimal” means to me.
